Q: Where is the flying field located?
A: The club flying field is located
near the intersection of Orient Drive and Haley Road east of Boring, Oregon. To
get there, turn east at the intersection of US 26 and Oregon 212 and turn left
(north) on SE 312th Avenue. The field gate entrance is just a short distance
past the intersection of 312 and Orient Drive on the east side of Orient Drive.
A Rock Shop is just across the road from the gate. For driving directions to the
club field from your location please see the field
map page.
Q: How much are yearly dues?
A: Dues currently are $55 per year. If
you are under 18 and living with a parent, dues are free. The club year runs
from April 1 to March 31. The first year dues are required in full and are then
prorated the second year for joining at a date other than April 1.
Q: Do I have to belong to AMA to be a club
member?
A: Yes, AMA dues are currently $48 per
year. Member ship is required because the club's insurance is underwritten by
the AMA. One flight with an instructor on a "buddy cord" is allowed before
joining the club or AMA.
Q: Do you have a training program?
A: The club provides qualified
instructors for training on Tuesdays beginning the first Tuesday after the start
of daylight savings time and ending the first Tuesday before the end of daylight
savings time. Flight training includes a written plan of instruction for each
student pilot. Training begins at about 3:30 pm and continues until dusk,
weather permitting. The club has two trainers (glow & electric) for initial
flights to provide the student an opportunity to "try it out" before making an
initial investment in aircraft and equipment. The trainers are not available
for continuous training.
Q: I am new to the hobby, what kind of plane,
engine, and radio should I start out with?
A: Before making an investment in
aircraft and equipment, come to a regular club meeting and ask questions. Club
members will be more than happy to provide answers. Generally, it is best to
have a high wing, flat bottom airfoil aircraft in the .40 engine size. The club
buddy boxes are all Futaba so it is best to have Futaba radio gear. However,
other brands of radio gear can be handled by the instructors.
Q: When and where are the club meetings?
A: The
club meets every second Monday of each month at 7:30 pm throughout the year.
The meetings are generally held at Camp Withycomb in Building 6100. Camp
Withycomb is located at 102nd and Clackamas Road just south of Highway 212-224.
During the summer months and good weather, meetings are sometimes held at the
club flying field. For
driving directions to Camp Withycomb from your location please see the
club information page.
Q: How big are the flying facilities; can I
fly a jet there?
A: The flying field is located on a
twenty acre parcel that is leased. The flying area is bounded on the west by
Orient Drive and the east by neighboring property. Flying is restricted within
those boundaries. Flying to the north is unlimited. There is both surfaced and
grass runways that parallel each other and are approximately 400' long. Jets
and larger than 1/4 scale aircraft are not recommended.
